American Housewife star Carly Hughes exits sitcom over “toxic environment”

US sitcom American Housewife has lost one of its regular stars, with Hughes announcing her departure from the series.

Hughes, who played Angela for four seasons of the ABC show, confirmed her exit from American Housewife in a statement, in which she alleged a “toxic environment” behind the scenes.

Speaking to Deadline, Carly said that she felt she could “no longer” work in what she claimed was the “toxic environment that was created on American Housewife”.

She continued: “I made the decision to leave to protect myself from that type of discrimination. As a Black woman in entertainment, I feel the responsibility to stand up for what I deserve, what we all deserve – to be treated equally.

“I wish the show well, and I am excited about a new chapter and to be able to pursue the opportunities ahead.”

In response to the claims, a spokesperson for American Housewife explained that they had hoped the actress would return for the show’s fifth season beyond the premiere, which featured Carly’s character, Angela.

Acknowledging Hughes’ concerns, and confirming that some form of action had been taken by the network, the statement continued: “Carly was a valued member of the cast, and we had hoped she would return to the show this season.

“The concerns she raised led to positive changes to the workplace and improvements to the culture, but we respect the decision she made to move on. We wish her nothing but the best.”

Deadline also reports that American Housewife’s creator Sarah Dunn is no longer an active producer on the show (though it’s not known if that’s related to Hughes’ claims).

Since Hughes’ complaint, the series’ line producer Mark J Greenberg is also thought to have stepped down, and showrunners Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz to have attended sensitivity training.
