Mitchell is an anchor and reporter working at WKYC Channel 3 in Cleveland, Ohio. He serves the station as the lead anchor of the 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts and managing editor of the Evening News. Before coming to Cleveland, he was the national correspondent for The Early Show, the CBS Evening News, and CBS News Sunday Morning, and anchor of the CBS Evening News weekend editions and The Early Show on Saturday.

He began his first television job at age 17 years old as a nighttime switchboard operator at KTVI-TV. After college graduation, he started his professional career at KMBC in Kansas City. He also worked at WFAA-TV as a reporter and at KMOV-TV as a reporter and anchor for five years. Larger markets and bigger stations soon followed and he moved to New York as the co-anchor of the overnight CBS News broadcast. During his tenure, he reported from Cuba, India, Indonesia, and The Marshall Islands, interviewed then-President Laurent Kabila, went to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and covered the war in Bosnia.

He was named a correspondent for Eye-to-Eye with Connie Chung in 1993. After two years, he was assigned to the CBS Washington bureau, and in 1997, he was named co-anchor of CBS News Saturday Morning and traveled extensively as a reporter for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and 48 Hours. On September 11, 2001, he was on the anchor desk with Dan Rather and later reported from Ground Zero and other parts of Manhattan. Not long ago, Mitchell anchored the live CBS Special Report coverage of the capture and death of Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011.
